LA MIOPÍA EN LOS NIÑOS DE EDAD ESCOLAR

Decidí ser médico a los 16 años y estudié intensamente hasta recibirme a los 23 recién cumplidos con promedio de honor en 1976. Por esa época desarrollé una miopía leve que no me dejaba ver bien los colectivos cuando viajaba de noche. Creía que era por estudiar tanto, como decían las abuelas.…
Al principio trabajé varios años en Sanidad Escolar a cargo de los niños en las escuelas del barrio de Pompeya y trabajé en atención de emergencias de niños a domicilio. Pero finalmente me incliné por asimilarme a la especialidad de mi familia. Así, a partir de 1980 estudié para ser Médico Oftalmólogo. Siempre me interesó el hecho de que los miopes leyeran bien sin lentes, pues parecía que la miopía era una adaptación biológica para poder leer sin esfuerzo.
Para 1995 cuando falleció nuestro padre y mentor ya tenía bastante experiencia en la especialidad por atender y cuidar a mis pacientes. Y entonces apareció Internet y pude acceder rápidamente a todas las investigaciones internacionales sobre Miopía. Pude conocer al Prof. Frank Schaeffel de Alemania, al Prof. Bill Stell de Canadá y al Prof. Ian Morgan de Australia, quienes trabajaban con animales que se volvían miopes y probaban frenar su avance. Esto auguraba la posibilidad de desarrollar medicamentos (que hoy ya tenemos) para detener la miopía. Así que me puse a trabajar para el futuro que se avecinaba. Primero averiguamos con Florencia Cortinez y José P. Chiappe cuantos miopes había en nuestra población publicando nuestra estadística en la prestigiosa Revista Medicina Buenos Aires.
Y a partir del año 2000 publiqué mis investigaciones clínicas independientes en revistas internacionales con ayuda de mi hermano Guillermo, y la de los investigadores mencionados además de muchos más de Argentina, de Bélgica, Holanda, Polonia, Portugal, Alemania, Noruega, Israel, Iran, India, Estados Unidos, Brasil, Ecuador, Japón, Singapur, y Shanghai y Beijing en China. Muchos pacientes y médicos han colaborado desinteresadamente para ayudarme a realizar el intenso trabajo de investigación y para costear los aranceles de publicación, que en algunos casos llegan a miles de dólares.
Siento un gran agradecimiento por esto. Y ahora viene la etapa de divulgar en la sociedad los hallazgos de la ciencia, como que “la miopía en los niños se desarrolla por no estar al aire libre un par de horas por día”. Y también que la miopía aumenta “por leer contínuamente” o tal vez “por irse a la cama con el celu”. O que “el encierro de la pandemia agravó la miopía.”
Tal vez deberíamos estudiar más tiempo conversando y contándonos cuentos, y vivir más al aire libre como se hacía en los años previos a la era industrial.
